Brighton in Film

Brighton’s Marina is vast with many small boats and but almost no large ones. 1/80s 50mm F8.0 Fuji Acros 100 (expired) Nikon F100 with polariser.

Carrying on last week’s theme of exploring places outside of London, I headed to the popular seaside city of Brighton which I had only visited once before. Handily a few years back a new tunnel had enabled trains to run directly through all the way from Cambridge to Brighton and I had been meaning to make this journey for some time. Armed with my final roll of expired Fuji Acros 100 in my Nikon F100, I wanted to capture the best cross section I could in 37 images.

The first thing that greets you as you arrive - the train station which is impressive in of itself. 1/50s 50mm F8.0 Fuji Acros 100 (expired) Nikon F100.

Thankfully this time around I didn’t forget to leave the film in the fridge so only a single trip was required and, as this was in March, I had a bit more light to play around with. Sadly, many British seaside towns are mere shadows of their former selves from the glory days of the Victorian and early 20th century heydays, but Brighton still feels full of energy. With a successfully football club, well renowned university, and proximity to London alongside its popularity with tourists there is still plenty of wealth and activity to keep the place fresh and interesting. Yes, perhaps the British Airways i360 is a bit much, but I am sure it does provide great 360° views of the surrounding area. Though it wasn’t something I had time to use on the day.

The Madeira Lift - a Grade 11 listed Victorian lift which over the last fifteen years has seen extensive restoration work. 1/100s 50mm F8.0 Fuji Acros 100 (expired) Nikon F100.

In any case I hope whether you’ve been to Brighton many times or never at all, you’ll enjoy the set of images I’ve taken and assembled here. Do you have any suggestions on where I should visit next outside of London? Let me know in the comments down below.
