Hockey 2021-22 Season Round-up

I’ve witnessed plenty of battling for the ball this season. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 160.

Somehow, we are already well into Spring and a quarter of the way through 2022. Where the time has gone, I have no idea, but here we are. What that means however is my second season photographing local hockey matches has come to an end and so for this week’s blog I thought I’d share some of my favourite photos from across all the matches I’ve photographed. As ever I encourage people to get involved with their local sporting clubs, as without them the talent that filters all the way to Olympic athletes and championship winning teams would never emerge. Next up for me is the new cricket season which begins soon, let’s hope this good spell of weather we’ve been having recently continues for that. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the following images, and as ever please do leave your questions and comments down below.

Teamplay is important when trying to win the ball back. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 400.

Strong runs get the team into position to shoot. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 125.

But sometimes you need bursts of speed to get there. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 320.

Goalies saw plenty of action to keep the ball out of the net. 1/400s 300mm F2.8 ISO 400.

Though it’s not just the goalies who sometimes hit the decks. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 220.

Full stretch. 1/400s 300mm F2.8 ISO 800.

If you can keep up with the action then you can capture some really dramatic moments. 1/640s 300mm F2.8 ISO 125.

However sometimes things can get a bit too dramatic and players end up seeing yellow. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 160.

The coaches look on, hopefully not in dismay. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 900.

I love the facial expression here, it really emphasises the intense battle for the ball. 1/500s 300mm F2.8 ISO 220.

When you photograph the matches of the lower level teams you can see some dramatic differences in age between players. 1/640s 300mm F2.8 ISO 2000.

Another strong run. 300mm 1/500s F2.8 ISO 250.

Mixed hockey is becoming more popular and I had a chance to photograph one of these matches. The players look on as the ball flies towards the goal. 1/640s 300mm F2.8 ISO 200.

Who’s going to reach the ball first? 1/640s 300mm F2.8 ISO 800.

Getting a good team photo is important and I was pleased to see this one of the mixed team made it into the local paper. 1/200s 70mm F8.0 ISO 1250.

Don’t forget to take a few photos of the crowd. 1/640s 300mm F2.8 ISO 160.
